ORIGIN AND HISTORY

ERIMA – the heritage brand with over 120 years of team sports experience
The story of ERIMA began in 1900 as a small shop selling “gymnastics clothing” in Reutlingen, Swabia, founded by Remigius Wehrstein. Initially, the German sportswear manufacturer produced clothing for gymnastics, athletics, and fencing. Over time, team sports equipment took centre stage with the “sportswear and jersey business” in the 1920s. In 1951, the company was renamed after Erich Mak, who had already been the owner for 15 years.

From the 1960s to the 1970s, ERIMA became inseparably associated with German sport, especially when the brand became the “official outfitter of the German Olympic team in 1960.” To this day, ERIMA supplies various sports federations, including at the Olympic Games. Almost all Bundesliga football and handball teams, as well as the German national football team, wore ERIMA jerseys. Franz Beckenbauer, Sepp Maier, and Gerd Müller won the 1974 World Cup in ERIMA kits. Until 1980, the German national football team wore jerseys from the Swabian heritage brand.

Due to age, Erich Mak sold ERIMA to adidas in 1976 after nearly 40 years. adidas produced textiles at ERIMA and gradually took over sponsorship contracts. Outsourcing production to Asia in 1993 nearly led to the brand logo disappearing from public view. In 1998, Wolfram Mannherz became managing director and shareholder in 2000. Since a management buy-out in 2004, he has been the sole owner of ERIMA. He restructured the company and focused even more on team sports, forming new partnerships with top clubs.

Today, ERIMA remains a heritage brand in team sports, indispensable across various disciplines. The foundation for the future was laid in 2019 with the opening of the ERIMA logistics centre in Kirchentellinsfurt, Swabia.
