Origins and History


Founder Kevin Plank played college football at the University of Maryland in 1996. Over time, he realised that existing sportswear couldn’t keep up with the extreme demands of high-performance sport. From this, the brand Under Armour was born – literally meaning “under the armour.” The clothing quickly gained popularity among athletes in the US and soon after in Europe. What started in the basement of Kevin Plank’s grandmother’s house has grown into a global company with over 15,000 employees. Yet Kevin Plank’s mindset still defines the brand today: Under Armour develops sportswear that helps every athlete become better and achieve their goals.
